The Newsletter of Granite State Wheelers
November / December 2020 Volume 48, Issue 6

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Looking back and looking ahead

As we enter the “quiet season” for most on-road cycling, I wish to recap some GSW history and plans for the future as the club starts our 50th year. Certainly 2020 has been very tumultuous thanks to Covid-19 with most rides and all weekend events cancelled including our Seacoast Century. The GSW election and national general election should be over by the time you read this article. May 2021 bring us some sense of normalcy!

Looking back, the GSW started in July 1971 when a small group met at the Manchester YMCA.  Roger Charest, our first President, knew Fred McLaughlin who was the “ace mechanic” at A.T. Nault’s bike shop in Manchester.  I met Roger at Honeywell in Lawrence by “chasing him down” after seeing a League of American Wheelmen decal on his car window.  Fred Schottler worked with Roger in the same department and started tracking GSW memberships using IBM punch cards.  His wife JoAnne Schottler was our first secretary and newsletter editor for several years.

In 1972 Fred gave me the deck of mutilated punch cards to get the data onto ½” magnetic tape. I wrote the first GSW membership label print / sort / report program in octal machine code using a Honeywell mainframe computer off-hours – and with no keyboard, just the “huge” control panel. As available mainframes became problematic, I wrote a new membership program in COBOL that ran on mini-computers, one of which I still own. In 1999 because “Y2K” was not supported on the mini and PCs were taking the world by storm, I wrote another membership package using the integrated Microsoft Office Suite with the help of Judi Hull. Finally, I could process GSW memberships at home versus long nights off-hours at Honeywell. I’m pleased to say that for 48 years of processing GSW memberships on three major computer platforms, never once was the database lost, corrupted, or labels / listings late for a Pedal Talk mailing. Memberships have been processed and mailed typically once a week in batch mode, that requiring several hours given all the unique items in each mailing. (See separate article on archiving GSW history at UMass Boston.)

Looking ahead, current cloud-based applications and the GSW Pedal Talk “going 100% digital” with this Nov-Dec 2020 issue, the need for paper labels disappears. Using an integrated group of apps to automate the entire membership processing procedure, Mark St. Denis and Aaron Ellinwood plan to phase-in this scheme over the next few months. I am working closely with Mark to make a smooth transition. New and renewed memberships will be processed in minutes with no manual outgoing weekly snail-mail. The net cost including Squarespace fees will be less than what we paid for prior credit card processing. Even so, membership fees have been increased effective November first as more services are provided to GSW members. The MeetUp system and Ride with GPS services were unknown ten years ago. Stay tuned and watch our website plus Pedal Talk for exciting changes!

Questions? If you have any questions about the GSW or suggestions, please give me a shout! This is your club and there is always room for improvement. Enjoy your cycling and stay safe.

“Happy Holidays!”

What about GSW history? Does anyone really care?

I never thought anyone would be interested in the history of a bicycling club until I received a call on September 21 from Larry Finison representing the Bicycle History Collections at UMass in Boston. He works with Tom Francis of MassBike on recreational bike club histories.

For some details, UMass Boston Library Archives collects unique and original archival materials related to bicycling from 1878-present, including clippings, pictures, scrapbooks, films, brochures, diaries, organizational records, newsletters, correspondence, rare books and cycling magazines, and more.

All arenas of bicycling are of interest: racing, commuting, recreation, bicycles for work, cycling advocacy, charitable events and tours, and more. They especially want materials about under-represented communities and women in cycling.

They do not take bicycles, anything cloth, or trophies/medals, but you can upload images and stories by visiting tinyurl.com/bicycling-images. There is no charge to have items added to the archive or for the public to request viewing at the library. At long last, I know where all my “GSW stuff” can go, maybe next year when I clean out my closets! Do you have anything to donate?

Bike Helmets for Every Cyclist

SAFETY EDUCATION3>

Choosing the right helmet is as important as choosing the right bike. There are three main types of helmets.

Road helmets which are sleek, venting, and prioritize low weight. Another type is the mountain bike helmet, which provides more coverage if a crash should happen. A third type is the commuter and every day helmet.

All helmets sold in the United States meet Consumer Product Safety Standard ( CPSC ), required for all helmets sold. Some helmets offer added safety features to protect against brain injuries.

The growing concern over concussion and brain injuries has led to better research and new helmet technologies. Some companies have been developing technologies to reduce the risk of concussions.

MIPS, which stands for Multi – directional Impact Protection System. A low friction layer built into the helmet that allows the helmet to rotate on your head diminishing rotational forces. Bontrager brand by Trek uses a technology in some of its newest helmets, called WaveCel, which is a thick layer comprised of polyester that crumples and flexes on impact. Specialized brand has a new tech called ANGi that pairs with a smart phone app to monitor your activity. Sensors in the helmet can detect abrupt decelerations in the event of a crash and alert your emergency contact that you may be injured and send them your location.

We Know You Ride a Bike…..!

Are you a Bike Ambassador?

Biking is a fun, recreational activity that in these uncertain times is gaining popularity making it even more important to ensure our NH communities are safe and convenient for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Bike-Walk Alliance is the only state-wide organization dedicated to this goal and, as a bicyclist, we need your voice and your support!

An individual membership is just $35.00/year and every one of those dollars goes towards advocating for safer streets, better legislation, rail trail networks, safety education for our children and adults– all of which contribute to healthier communities.

Please visit our website at www.bwanh.org and check out everything we do! Then click on the JOIN/RENEW button and contribute to making New Hampshire an even greater place to bike, walk and live.

This Trek 5000 has additional upgraded components to make for a smoother, more comfortable ride and easier hill climbs.
